The frustration of wasting your time

When you play video poker online or in a land based casino, you can find out the machine odds or percentages before you start playing; however, when you start playing you wonder if those numbers are simply that, numbers put there to make you think the odds are true. The good news is that machines are based on random number generators and that they are playing with a standard deck of cards which means that the odds are the same as they would be in any other deck of cards. The percentage of payout can vary from one machine to another but over time it will pay out what it says, it simply takes time.
So, if the percentage will even out over time and the odds are the same as they are in any regular deck of cards, it would lead one to believe that if you play long enough you will win. This is true and not true. It's true that the longer you play the more often you are going to have some winning hands; however, if you have to keep your bet very low to keep playing then you aren't going to win the bigger payouts. Many players try to make up for this by altering their bets as they win and then lowering them when they lose several hands in a row. You still have to bet the minimum required to win the jackpot if you are playing a progressive machine.
The odds are what throw most players. If you have a hand that needs a 10 and you discard a 2, here are still 3 other 2's in the deck that could appear along with 3 other 10's which means the odds are even and you simply have to take a chance. You can't change the odds. However, if you have the money and the patience to wait the random number generator out, you can win.
You and only you can decide when you have played as much as you can afford to play. You should never make that decision based on the machine being due. Even though the games are based on odds, there are no rules on when those odds are going to pan out.
